The Information Survivability Workshops
Fourth Information Survivability Workshop (ISW-2001/2002)
"Impediments to Achieving Survivable Systems"
Sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society, Technical Committee on Fault Tolerant Computing, with support from the US Department of State and the Canadian Office of Critical Infrastructure Protection and Emergency PreparednessOrganized by the CERT Coordination Center, Software Engineering Institute

Tutorial
Tutorial: "Information System for the Power Grid" Anjan Bose, Washington State University
Professor Bose will talk about how the grid is operated and the communication-control systems required for its operation. He will concentrate on the information system needed for real time operation of the grid in order to provide sufficient background for people to have an intelligent discusion during the the panel session that follows. The tutorial will not cover the many aspects of the information systems used by power companies for inventory, billing, engineering design, etc. because these do not directly affect the survivability of the grid.
Panel: "Impediments to Survivability of the Power Grid"
Moderator: Anjan Bose, Washington State University
Panelists:
Jeff Dagle, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Mr. Dagle has been involved with a USDOE study to assess the vulnerability of the information system for the power grid. Although the actual assessment is not public, He is able to talk generally about the vulnerabilities
Paul Oman, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories
Mr. Oman is in charge of information security for SEL who is the leading manufacturer of power grid protective relays. He is also the PI for a NIST funded project on this subject.
Ernie Hayden, Alstom-ESCA
Mr Hayden is in charge of information security for Alstom-ESCA, the leading implementer of control centers for the power grid.
