Job #6273 - Test Engineer

SUMMARY

The CERT® Program is part of the Software Engineering Institute (SEI), a federally funded research and development center at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. CERT engages in cutting-edge research and development, helps organizations and individuals protect their systems, and provides robust training and education programs. Our focus is on ensuring that software developers, internet security experts, network and system administrators, and others are able to resist, recognize, and recover from attacks on networked systems.

As a member of the Engineering Team in the CERT Network Situational Awareness group, the candidate selected for this position will participate in efforts to develop and deploy software tools for monitoring large-scale computer networks. The selected candidate will participate and support the development of software tools by developing system level packaging and tests. The selected candidate must be capable of operating specialized networking equipment and hardware. The selected candidate will work independently to create an automated infrastructure for operating and testing the network analysis tool system.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Management of a network sandbox for test execution.
  2. Act as a technical resource for the operation and configuration of various pieces of network infrastructure both internally and for customers.
  3. Manage and move PC and network equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Training: BS in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, or a related quantitative field of study with eight years of applicable experience.

Experience: Applicable experience in the design and implementation of complex testing and networking, including experience in:

  • Unix Shell Scripting in Unix Shell.
  • System administration in Unix/Linux
  • Knowledge of Nagios, system patching and other administration tools.
  • Familiarity with system automation
  • Knowledge of switches, firewalls and routers.
  • Operation and maintenance of network firewalls and VPN’s
  • Familiarity with software Q&A tools

Skills/Abilities:

  • Deep familiarity with general Unix/Linux operating system concepts, tools, etc.
  • Understanding of carrier level communications
  • Ability to execute test plans and report results, entry/exit documentation.
  • Understanding of basic computer systems, and network, database and application security issues
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent reasoning and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively without close supervision
  • Ability to attend customer meetings and respond to customer requirements
  • Operation of carrier grade network equipment

OTHER

Physical/Mobility: Sedentary in an office setting with some mobility, i.e., able to travel to various locations within the SEI and CMU community as well as travel up to 20% to customer sites.

Environmental Conditions: Normal office conditions; close contact with computer display for extended periods of time

Mental: Ability to work meticulously with careful attention to detail; ability to meet deadlines while working on multiple tasks – sometimes under pressure and with shifting priorities; ability to deal collaboratively, diplomatically, and successfully with customers, co-workers and other professional colleagues, managers, and staff; ability to grasp the big picture, direction, and goals of an effort; ability to quickly learn new procedures, techniques, approaches, etc.

Other: Candidate must be able to pass a background investigation, obtain a TS/SCI security clearance, and be a US citizen.
